Let's start with today. At 8:00 am Den, Kim, Rose, and I were downtown at Dr. Bacon's office (Dr. Bacon is Den's gastroenterologist) for Den's appointment. Dr. Bacon was encouraging and discouraging today. The spot on Den's liver is most probably malignant. However, the presence of a malignancy is cause to move Den up higher on the candidate for a liver transplant list. We spent over two hours in Dr. Bacon's offices, mainly to see him for 15 minutes then to be briefed on all the ins and outs of the transplant protocol. From there we went down the hall where Den had blood drawn for various tests. [Para] The next step is a biopsy of the liver. Den will have that next Tuesday. A lot of testing and prep work has to be done prior to any surgery, actually prior to Den being approved for the candidate list. It is clear that this liver transplant team leaves little to chance. Den will have to be ready for this major surgery with as little as one hour's notice, once the approvals and tests are all complete. It is clear that many factors go into the determination/decision of who gets a liver and when, and of course one big factor is chance. [Para.] The last we heard from Pete and Janet was a phone call as they were crossing the border into Mexico. [Para] Last weekend I spent with the Abbotts. Chris and I took Rose to the airport Saturday morning, then he and I went to the facility for a visit with Den. Later in the afternoon Chris and I went to see Shelly's grandmother who is very ill at home. From there I went to the Abbotts. On Sunday Kim and I took Den out to his mother's in O'Fallon for a Boaz Day. This was the first outing for Den, other than for medical reasons, since November 4. He had a fine time, but he was surely exhausted by the day. [Para] Shirley came home on Monday, Rose on Tuesday. Chris called for each of them. Mark and Karen are in Chicago this week for Karen to attend a trade show at the McCormick Center. They are staying in Rose and Shirley's apartment.
