Christmas on the 22nd
Santa arrived early this year, but we don't have any little ones who know the truth about him so we had our brunch and gift opening when everyone could be here. Scott and Beth and the boys had to leave for that long drive shortly after gift opening, We ate first but I didn't hear either of the boys complain. They must have been hungry even after that wonderful dinner we had at J Buck's the night before,
It got even colder overnight and there's a possibility of some snow flurries. Liz and Dave Prange and I are going out to dinner tonight. Liz and I have a long history together. She and Brick and I worked at GMAC together. She still works there though it's called Ally now. I'm eager to catch up on happenings with her and their family and our mutual acquaintances.
I'm having an interview with a possible caretaker/companion this Friday and will see how that goes. Linda can't come any more until after January and I haven't heard back from Joan. Meanwhile, if anyone hears of someone looking for this sort of position, tell them about me.

Jalen's 16'th Birthday Celebration
Pete and Janet said they had about two inches of snow while we had rain and falling temperatures all day yesterday.
Scott and Beth and the boys arrived at three fifteen just as Scott said they would. Jalen won't be 16 until tomorrow, but we celebrated early at a time convenient for everyone. Brayden didn't think this was necessary. Jalen is a bit shy so it was difficult to get him to make a short speech but he did it. We had the dinner at J Buck's in a private room. Chris and Shelly had gone over there and decorated before the rest of us arrived, We all know where Jalen will be tomorrow - the license bureau. Rose will post pictures later.

Christmas Eve Eve
Scott and Beth and the boys will be arriving sometime today, and since it's Saturday I will be hearing from Pete and Janet. We're having Jalen's birthday party tonight and Christmas tomorrow, so it will really be quiet around here on Christmas Day. We are still eating delicious Linda's cookies, She certainly made tons of them.
Rose was much relieved after her trip to the hairdresser. She looked better too. She had some bad news for me though. The hairdresser was going to come here to the house to cut my hair before the party but couldn't find time. Any pictures we take will not have me in close ups.
I think Donald told me he and Vita were flying to Kansas City for the holidays and then were going to Florida for a while. Margaret and some of her family and I are going to try to get together for a either breakfast, lunch or dinner, whatever we can manage.
It's been nice weather here the last few days but rained a lot last night and is supposed to get really cold Sunday and Monday. Chris and I walked the night we went out to dinner and Rose found my FitBit and Shirley found the right battery. Now I can keep track of how far I walk.

Preparing for Christmas
I'm up early but went to bed early so I'm rested up. Rose and Shirley will probably spend most of the day getting ready for our Christmas celebration and I believe Rose is getting a haircut. Our hairdresser is coming here to the house to cut mine tomorrow. We both need it, in case we take pictures or even if we don't take any.
No one else is up yet so I still haven't had any coffee or company. I'll post more later when I get my coffee.

Family and Railroad History
Joe sent Sue two e-mails with very interesting but, as yet, incomplete information: Here is one:
"Anyway. some Greenwood News, (Aunt Lois's home) P&J sent a picture of a man riding a RR Velocipede and I have been attempting to do some research on the picture. James Pekarek is the main source of my information as he has a Buda gasoline engine in his Northview and Frisco RR Display. He says these were used from about 1909 until 1920 or so era on this model velocipede.. It is possible the engine (only) he has on display was used on the very machine in the picture? (My) research continues. In talking by phone to Harriet Lafoe Natalie in FL, she asked if the guy pictured is tall? Maybe she has the same picture?

"J.P. the pictures below were in a box of old pictures from a family member who was raised around Greenwood/Northview. Her maiden name was Lois Willis and she married my dad's brother. We think there may be a connection between the pictures and the time Edward LaFoe was section foreman at Northview. He settled in Northview after being involved in building the rock culverts (1870) between Lebanon & Springfield. He and some of his immediate family members are buried in the Welch Cemetery. Some say he was also involved in building the rock fence at the Marshfield Cemetery? Edward LaFoe was my Dad's grandfather.
The pictures are not clear but it looks like a foot pedaled velocipede. Got any ideas about its history? Some of the other pictures appear to go back to the time of the Civil War.
Next Subject: The RR Historical Museum had a very successful year and we are commencing or continuing a fund to build a replica depot.
We are considering a full scale model about 20 X 60 Feet. Started off thinking 18 X 36 but have been strongly (and somewhat financially) persuaded to built a larger one.

Crab Cakes
Still eating lots of Linda's cookies and still have a lot left. Shirley shops at Whole Foods on Wednesdays so we also have cinnamon rolls today. She and Rose are going to make me fat. I had been wanting crab cakes, so Chris called around and found a place called The Highlander that had some delicious ones. We went there last night. Shelly was going to join us, but her Uncle Butch got sick and she was tending him. The restaurant was in the location near where Midwest Recovery was. I once worked for Midwest Recovery so it was a memorable location though it didn't seem so. The crab cakes and the potato soup were both good. I would go back there.
Pete and Janet are preparing for Christmas. Janet baked her traditional fruitcakes and she, like Linda, makes lots of different kinds of cookies. When I was 15 I lived with Pete and Janet, and she taught me how to make all these different kinds. I kept doing it myself for years. Pete and Janet and Family are having a quieter Christmas than their Thanksgiving. Their dinner will be on Christmas Day with Nancy's family. Kelly and the boys aren't coming because they were there for Thanksgiving, and the boys will spend part of the time with their mom. Merri has to work the next day and it's a long drive for her and Albert.

We're trying a place in Clayton because we couldn't get a reservation on Saturday night to the place we went last year. We waited too long to call. This new (to us) place is J Buck's. It's Jalen's 16th birthday, and we want to make it extra special. Sunday morning we will have Christmas brunch and then Scott and family will have that long drive back to Louisville.

Helper/Companion
I'd like to find an additional helper/companion to spend some time with me at the lake when Linda and others can't. If any of my readers has any ideas, email or call me and we'll set up an interview. Got to Hurry
Rose and I are I are both up rather early this morning . I have to have my eyes checked by my opthamalogist as a follow up to the YAG procedure he did two weeks ago. And get a prescription for new glasses, My appointment is at eight fifty and we need to be home by ten because we have some outside help coming. The outside help is with Martha's Hands Agency as needed. The CNA spends 4 hours with me exercising, bathing, fixing lunch, and any thing else I need in that span. Her employer us sent a beautiful poinsetta yesterday.
No hurry now. I'm back from the eye doctor and the CNA has finished her chores and departed. We're going to have our Family Christmas Sunday with a brunch. It's a bit early, but that's when Scott and Beth and the boys can make it. Rose and Shirley put up the tree with Joy and Goldman and Luke's help while I was at the lake this weekend. They didn't put any icicles on it but there are lots of ornaments.
We've been eating Linda's cookies like crazy. They are so good. I'm not sure when I'll get back to the lake again. We're trying to set up the calendar for the rest of this year, and if anyone can go for at least three days it would be a good trip. We starting to fill in the January 2014 calendar too, It was certainly nice being down there those days with Linda and I look forward to more.

Back in St. Louis
I'm back in St. Louis now after a wonderful stay at the lake. Linda baked Christmas cookies, and I probably gained weight while we were there. She made a meatloaf the last night we were there and we had the leftovers here in St. Louis when we got back. Rose is going to send her thank you notes for her consideration of the rest of us. Chris was here when we got back and helped unload the car. He had to sample the cookies. There were six different kinds, It took him quite some time and some samples to determine his favorite. I believe he said he just couldn't decide so just kept trying them all. Yesterday Linda did say she would like to give Scott and Chris a lesson in sheet folding. When she was looking for sheets to change for her bed, the only ones she could find were what she called 'wadded up'. She made do. She did love the new washer and dryer.
Rose has her guitar lesson today. She says she hasn't been practicing as much as she should have but she did practice last night. My Notre Dame football player from BJEC called me Saturday night and he truly misses me. And I miss him.

HAPPY DAYS
Linda and I are at the lake. I forgot my computer and will send this update through Rose
and Linda’s. It is so good to be
here and out of that place. We
have very cold temperatures and probably will continue to do so but we don’t
plan on going outside. It’s
Saturday and Pete and Janet called as usual. Rose has called this morning too. I heard from Donald this week and he, like everyone else,
was so happy for me. I’ve had lots
of congratulations and well-wishers who felt so relieved when I got out of there.
Linda is a superb
cook. We did our grocery shopping
the day we got here after she had our menu made out and we checked what was
here. She made several batches of
cookies yesterday and is going to make some more today. I’m using her computer and will forward
this to Rose to post. Back to
Linda, she’s helped me with my exercises and we’ll do more today. I didn’t bring my walker because
everything is uphill and cold right now.
Rose gets my pills ready before we leave St. Louis and Linda is very
careful about my taking them on schedule.
I’m getting
ready to get in the shower. Linda
and I have to be home by late tomorrow afternoon and I’m already hating to
leave. We bought some logs and
have been burning a fire in the fireplace. Though it may not put out much heat, it’s beautiful.

Leaving For Lake
Rose and I are up packing for my trip to the lake. It is so good to be out of BJEC. As you can see by the pictures, I made several friends and plan on going back just to visit and perhaps have dinners with them. Since my return home yesterday, I've felt just much better.
Took a break and had my morning shower. Rose was even up before I was, and I'm usually awake first. Chris came by on his way home from work yesterday evening just to say he was glad to see me at home.
We hired a caregiver who will help some here at home with my exercise, bathing, lunch, and various chores around the house if time permits. She will start Monday and will be on a strictly part time basis. I will use her on a five day basis for the first week and see how it works.

Farm for Sale in Seymour, MO
Linda, Sue's friend and caregiver, has relatives who would like to move so they will be putting their property in Seymour up for sale. It is 150 acres with a barn, a house and not sure what else. If you know of anyone who might be interested in living in that area, would you let them know this?
